Frequently asked questions
The SugarFriend idea fits in one sentence, but it raises real questions, and we'd rather answer them straight. If yours isn't here, write to us.
The idea
Is SugarFriend a dating app?
No. There's no flirting, no profiles to swipe through, no hidden agenda: SugarFriend is for sharing outings and making friends, nothing else. Someone suggests a nice moment, someone else comes along to share it. If you're looking for love, you've got the wrong app, and that's perfectly fine.
How is it different from sugar dating?
All the difference in the world. Sugar dating rests on a self-interested relationship between partners; SugarFriend is the exact opposite: an outing offered with nothing expected in return, between people who simply don't want to experience it alone. The name is a deliberately light-hearted wink, like our little sugar-cube mascots, to take the drama out of something nobody dares talk about: how hard it can be to find someone to go out with. Nothing romantic, nothing transactional, active moderation, and a framework written in black and white in every invitation.
What is a Sugar? And a Friend?
The Sugar is the one who suggests: they create a SugarInvite, choose who comes and cover the cost. The Friend is the one who takes part: they browse the invitations near them and ask to join the ones they like. And if you want to do both depending on the day, the dual account is there for that. Details on the How it works page.
Who pays for the outing?
The Sugar, in full, and it's stated in the invitation before anyone asks to join. The Friend doesn't spend a cent. No splitting the bill, no surprises. And it buys nothing: no service, no company, nothing in return.
Do I owe anything in exchange for the invitation?
No. Nothing. The invitation is a gift, not a barter. A Sugar who suggested otherwise is breaking the app's rules: report them, our team takes it from there.
Invitations and outings
What is a SugarInvite?
A complete outing invitation: a category (restaurant, drinks, culture, sport, leisure…), a place, a date, a time, a price range per person, the number of guests and a description. The Friend knows exactly what they're saying yes to.
How do I join an outing?
You open the app, look at the SugarInvites around you, and ask to join the one that tempts you. If the Sugar accepts, the outing lands in your agenda and a chat opens between you to organise the day.
How do we recognise each other on the spot?
Every invitation has a “How will we recognise each other?” field: “booking under my first name”, “I'll be wearing a blue cap”… And since the chat is open before the outing, you can fine-tune live.
Can we go out as a group?
Yes. The Sugar sets the number of guests when creating the SugarInvite: a friendly one-to-one or a small group, it's their call. Messaging also allows group conversations of up to 4 people.
Can I edit or cancel my SugarInvite?
Yes. A published invitation can still be edited, and you can cancel it if something comes up. In that case, participants are notified right away in the app.
And if I, as a Friend, have to cancel?
It happens. You can withdraw your request or cancel your participation from the app; the Sugar is informed automatically. Out of respect for the person who organised and booked everything, give as much notice as you can.
Safety and trust
Who can join?
Any adult. Sign-up is reserved for people aged 18 and over, and your date of birth is requested when you create your account. Shy, new in town, working from home, in the city for a few days or simply keen to widen your circle: there's no typical profile, just people who want to go out.
How do you make sure it's safe?
Through a stack of concrete safeguards: a framework announced before every outing, an adults-only app, reporting of profiles, invitations and messages, blocking that cuts off all contact, mutual reviews after every outing, and a team that examines every report. We've detailed all of it, without embellishment, on the Safety & trust page.
How do reviews work?
After every outing, participants review each other. The average rating is visible on the profile; the detail of reviews stays private. A review can only be left after an outing that actually took place together.
What do others see on my profile?
Your photos, your first name and the initial of your last name, your age, your city, your interests and your rating. Never your full name or your contact details.
Someone makes me uncomfortable, what do I do?
You report them from their profile, their invitation or the conversation, and you can block them immediately: they will no longer be able to write to you, see you or invite you. Our team examines every report and applies sanctions, up to account deletion.
Account and app
When is the app coming out?
Very soon, on iOS and Android. Leave your email on the home page: we'll let you know the second it's available, and we won't write to you about anything else.
How do I sign up?
With your email or your Google or Apple account. You then enter your first name, date of birth, city, interests, at least two photos, and choose your role: Sugar, Friend or both. Five minutes, tops.
How do I delete my account?
Directly in the app's settings, with a double confirmation to avoid slips. Deletion cancels your ongoing invitations and anonymises your data, in line with the GDPR. Details are in our privacy policy (in French).
