Sugar Friend is an application that allows one person (the Sugar Friend) to invite another person (the guest) to an all-expenses paid outing. The app first launched in the Paris region, and will later be rolled out to major cities across France, before it’ll be exported to other European capitals.
The app connects people who share similar interests but don't have the time or the opportunity to meet friends through their everyday social life.
The meeting is organised via the app and works on the principle that one person, the Sugar Friend, invites a friend (the guest) via the app for an all-expenses paid outing.
The Sugar Friend chooses his/her guest on the app according to a predefined criteria such as age and common interests. He then concludes the agreement with the friend (the guest) via the app’s direct messaging platform.
This app seeks to answer society's strong trend which has made it more and more difficult to meet new friends that are not virtual.
A lack of friends may be the consequence of diverse causes like a job that requires a lot of travel, moving to a new city, a separation, working alone from home or even shyness. Whatever the reason, the result remains the same: more and more people are starting to feel isolated and alone.
Sugar Friend facilitates connections by the notion of invitation. It is a way to break the ice, the invitation may be considered as a welcome gift. The deal is clear from the start, so there is no misunderstanding. The relationship between the one who invites (the Sugar Friend) and the one who gets invited (the guest) is more balanced than one might think at first sight. Not only does the Sugar Friend meet a new acquaintance who may become a friend, but he has the privilege of choosing the type of outing, the schedule and the budget.
The cost of the outing can vary between tens to hundreds of euros, which can allow for a large scope of activities ranging from a drink on a terrace, to a dinner and a show, an entrance fee to an amusement park, or an air sport experience, for example.
